TABRETT: ARTIST'S IDEOLOGY Working so closely with nature in conjunction with the Environment Agency, has impacted on my belief that one should endeavour to leave a minimal 'carbon footprint'. An example of my beliefs is that I do not drive a car and use public transport to get to my destination because I feel strongly about the pollutant effect of every vehicle on the road. My ideologies have informed my art work and as an artist I believe that I can achieve both high art and pictorial images with a minimum human interference in the environment. This includes not using unsustainable materials such as paint, canvas, clay, ink, or even glue, be it from a natural or a chemical source. Instead I use only natural materials which I find in that specific environment. I try not to use manufactured tools unless essential for a specific piece of art, and I do not use adhesives in the creation of my artwork, as this would be contrary to my philosophy. The art that I create using wood, rocks, mud, sand, leaves and other natural materials, is by its nature ephemeral because all the components occur naturally within the environment and will alter or degrade through time and/or the elements. The
sculptural piece has to look good within the environment as well as looking
good pictorially. I therefore always ensure that the photographs of the
art works are pictorial because ultimately this will be the only record
of the art works' existence. |
